Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR)
The ESPR is a framework regulation by the European Union aimed at making products sold in the EU market more sustainable and circular. A key feature of this regulation is the introduction of specific information requirements and the Digital Product Passport (DPP). The information requirements mandate manufacturers to disclose detailed information about the environmental impact, composition, and end-of-life handling of their products, ensuring transparency and enabling better choices for consumers and recyclers. The European Union will issue delegated acts for each product category.
EU Directive on Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence
This directive aims to ensure that companies operating within the EU, including both EU and non-EU entities that meet specific criteria, adhere to stringent due diligence requirements regarding human rights and environmental impacts within their operations and value chains. A novel aspect of the CSDDD is the requirement for the largest companies to adopt climate transition plans aligned with the goal of limiting global warming to 1.5°C, as outlined in the Paris Agreement.
EU Green Claims Directive
In an effort to combat greenwashing, the European Commission proposed this directive to ensure that claims are reliable, verifiable, and based on scientific evidence. Substantiation and Verification: Companies must substantiate their environmental claims using life cycle assessments and ensure these claims are verified by independent and accredited third parties. • Common environmental claims like 'net zero', 'carbon neutral', and 'eco-friendly' cannot be used in marketing communications unless they are substantiated and verified in accordance with the directive's requirements.
EU Critical Raw Materials Act
The European Critical Raw Materials Act (CRM Act) represents a comprehensive strategy by the European Union to secure and sustain the supply of critical raw materials essential for the EU's economy. The Act also focuses on enhancing circularity and sustainability across all stages of the critical raw materials value chain.
